Feast of Saint Onuphrius the Hermit
📅 Every year, on 1 and 2 August
On 1 and 2 August Petina, a municipality of 1,214 inhabitants in the province of Salerno, celebrates its patron Saint Onuphrius the Hermit (sant'Onofrio eremita).
From the eighth century Greek monks came here and took to living inside the caves of the Alburni, making of them a laura, that is a monastery of cells hollowed out of the rock. Families settled around them, and so the village was born. The grotta del Lauro had been a sanctuary of Saint Michael even earlier, and a tunnel still links it to the middle of the town.
In another cave of these mountains, the grotta Milano, bones have been found of bear, of spotted hyena and of leopard: beasts of a very cold age. And up on the plateau, above a thousand metres, an old shepherds' hut has become an astronomical observatory, with a mirror of eighty-five centimetres under a dome of five.
