Feast of Saint Matthew

On 21 September Sicignano degli Alburni celebrates Saint Matthew; the village also preserves the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Incoronata.
Sicignano degli Alburni has 3,419 inhabitants between the Tanagro valley and the Alburni mountains, almost all of it inside the Cilento national park; on its coat of arms it has a rocky mountain with a golden sun above it. Tradition traces the village back, around 450 before Christ, to Lucius Siccius Dentatus, tribune of the plebs, sent to fight the Sabines who were plundering the countryside of Rome: according to Livy he was killed by treachery on the initiative of the decemvirs, who were afraid of the speeches with which he demanded that the plebeians be given back their rights.
The first document that names Sicignano is an act of 1086: the Norman count Asclettino di Sicignano, lord of Polla, gave the abbey of Cava dei Tirreni the monastery of San Pietro, and he died in the same year. Today the village is reached from a motorway junction, but the station is ten kilometres away, in a place called San Licandro: from there the railway to Lagonegro also set off, suspended since 1987 and replaced by a few bus runs.
