Saint Symphorosa, patron of the Filimarino Feudal Castle

Roccadaspide celebrates Saint Symphorosa on 18 July.
At the end of the nineties the municipality renamed itself Rocca d'Aspide, convinced that the name came from the asp, the snake said to infest the area. Then it went back: the likeliest explanation is that aspis in Greek means shield, and that the fortress was precisely a defence. A deed of 15 May 1092 calls it in Latin the castle they call asprium.
Long before, at the spring of the Cosa, the Greeks of Paestum had placed a sanctuary right on the edge of their territory: it served to meet the older inhabitants of these hills in a sacred place, and to trade something with them. Today Roccadaspide is known for the marrone, the chestnut that bears its name and carries the PGI mark.
