Feast of Saint Vitus
📅 Every year, on 15 June
On 15 June Felitto, a municipality of 1,296 inhabitants in the province of Salerno, celebrates its patron Saint Vitus with a 7-kilometre procession and taralli given to the faithful.
The fusillo of Felitto is a hollow cylinder of pasta, some twenty centimetres long, made by hand with eggs, flour, salt, water and oil, rolling the dough on a very thin four-sided iron. Legend says it was born during a sixteenth-century siege: the inhabitants had held out for ten days and the commander asked the women to cook with whatever was left.
Around the old town ran a wall seven hundred metres long with thirteen towers; seven are left, all round. People have left Felitto twice: at the end of the nineteenth century for America, and from the nineteen-sixties for Switzerland, Germany and northern Italy. In 2024 the two town councils approved the twinning with Old Forge, in Pennsylvania, where the descendants of the first are still many.
