In the upper quarter of Casal Sottano there is a house they call U Palazzo: there lived, from 1441 until his death, Ruggero Palaiologos, nephew of the last emperor of Constantinople. He was already here before the city fell, as guarantee of a treaty with the king of Naples, and after him came other Greeks, who founded a community.

Before dying he had the wooden choir of the parish church made, and above the lectern the double-headed eagle is still there; a German master rebuilt part of it between 1727 and 1730. On the Monte della Stella, where the coastal people took refuge from the barbarians, the sandstone blocks they call li Mòrge run round the summit like a wall.
