Valle dell'Angelo

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 280 · Postal code: 84070

It is the least populous comune in Campania, in the upper valley of the Calore, in the Cilento. It is thought to have been founded in the tenth century by Basilian monks; it was called Casaletto di Piaggine, and its people still call themselves casalettari. It was a hamlet of Laurino until 1873, when it became a comune under the name of Piaggine Sottane.

The present name comes from a cave: the grotto of Saint Michael the Archangel, which holds a statue of the archangel in a defensive stance. In the village there are two seventeenth-century churches and two palaces, and just outside the spring of the Festolaro; in the coat of arms a tree stands between two facing lions.
