Vallo della Lucania

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 8,680 · Postal code: 84078

The coat of arms of Vallo della Lucania is a sum: above, a heart clasped by two hands; below, a tower with its sentry. They are the two hamlets that formed the town, Cornuti and Spio, divided by a river once crossed by two bridges and now invisible, because it was covered over right in front of the town hall, beneath Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

In the eighteenth century silk and leather made Vallo rich enough to come through even the grain famine of 1764 unharmed. Then the institutions arrived: the court in 1850, the diocese in 1851. The name, though, was simply Vallo: della Lucania was added in 1863, after Italian unification. Above the town rises Monte Gelbison, with the sanctuary that pilgrims from all over Cilento climb to.
