Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Gioi celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; the historic centre features the Porta dei Leoni monument.
Gioi appears for the first time in 1131, in a diploma of the abbey of Cava de' Tirreni, which describes it as a fortified village. What it is known for, though, is a cured meat: the soppressata, smoked, with a ribbon of lard down the middle. And there is a way of keeping it that comes from the years of emigration: it is pushed inside a caciocavallo cheese.
Since 2000 Gioi, its hamlet Cardile and nearby Campora have been the subject of a genetic study: reading the registers of the comune and of the parishes, researchers have reconstructed a family tree of more than five thousand people, three hundred and fifty years long. These are small, isolated villages, and that makes them legible: the record of who married whom is all there, written down.
