Borgo Tossignano

Province: Bologna · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,302 · Postal code: 40021

The comune is made of two villages: Tossignano on the ridge, and the borgo below it that served it for centuries. Then the war turned the parts around: in September 1944 Tossignano was held for twelve days by partisans and then retaken by the Germans, the front stood still there for four months, and of the upper village almost nothing was left. In the fifties the comune brought its seat down into the borgo.

On the thirteenth of October 1756 the Santerno burst its banks and the village was spared; the next year they began to celebrate the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, and they have not stopped since: the Festa d'e' Borg has been held on the third Sunday of October since 1757, organised all along by the same confraternity. Between here and Casalfiumanese stands the sanctuary of the Madonna di Riviera, whose little panel is attested from 1448.
