Casalfiumanese

Province: Bologna · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,461 · Postal code: 40020

Between the tenth and the eleventh century the people living along the rio Salato decided to leave: they chose a knoll a little to the south, built a castle on it and moved there in a body; then they made themselves a free comune. In 1379, on the other hand, a feud broke out at Codronco with dead on both sides, and Bologna settled it by cutting the village in two: one half declared for Imola, the other for Bologna. That line is still there, and today it divides Casalfiumanese from Fontanelice.

Between this comune and Borgo Tossignano stands the sanctuary of the Madonna di Riviera, built of river stones, which has no equal in the valley. For more than four centuries it held a Madonna and Child painted by Jacopo Bellini in 1448: the original is now in Brera and a copy hangs in its place. In the ground round about there are salt-and-iodine springs and gas vents they call bollitori.
