Lizzano in Belvedere

Province: Bologna · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,309 · Postal code: 40042

On the houses and chimneys of Lizzano you see the «mummies»: carved stone heads, set there for good luck, which are traced back to the Gaulish custom of hanging the heads of enemies outside the house. The name comes from the Silva Litana, the wood the Celtic-Ligurian people held sacred, and in 753 the village appears as Massa Lizano in a donation to the abbey of Nonantola.

In 1293 the Senate of Bologna had a canal dug to bring beech trunks down to the city, diverting part of the Dardagna into the Reno. On 27 September 1944, at Ca' Berna, the Germans killed twenty-nine people, among them women and children; on 2 October the partisans freed the village, and the next day the liberation committee appointed its mayor. At Pianaccio, a hamlet of Lizzano, Enzo Biagi was born.
