Julius Caesar’s crossing turned a local stream into a global idiom, yet the Rubicon's exact location was lost to time. The mystery was resolved in 1991 when the Fiumicino, running through this Romagnol town, was identified as the original waterway. Promptly, the municipality changed its name from Savignano di Romagna to Savignano sul Rubicone.
Home to 17,500 residents in the Forlì-Cesena province, the town sits 30 kilometres from Forlì. Standing by the riverbanks to picture Caesar casting his die is a compelling reason to pause here. Though locals call it Savgnèn in their dialect, the municipality is now permanently anchored to Roman history.
