Thirteenth-century documents call this place Castrum Boschi, and in Romagnol it is still E Bos-c, the Wood; the name Il Bosco stayed in ordinary use until the twentieth century, while Gambettola only became official in 1638, when the whole fief passed to the Papal State as the Comune di Gambettola. The wood is in the arms as well, under the motto Nonnullorum foliorum, of many leaves. In 1371 the castrum had twenty-six hearths, about a hundred and thirty people, and was little more than a holding south of the Via Emilia.

Bringing its two halves together was the reward for changing sides: Gottifredo di Rodolengo d'Iseo, a captain in the service of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, went over to the papacy after his lord's defeat and was given Villa Bosco as well, so the territory came under a single jurisdiction. Napoleon dissolved the comune and shared it out between Longiano and Gatteo; the Restoration gave it back in 1817. The Gothic Line brought down a good part of the old buildings, and the town was liberated on the fifteenth of October 1944. Its later fortune came from other people's discards: from the nineteen-sixties rags and cast-off material were collected for reuse, and scrap and metal recycling are still the local industry. The carnival, held since 1886 on Easter Monday, falls when Lent is already over.
