San Mauro Pascoli

Province: Forlì-Cesena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 11,090 · Postal code: 47030

Until 1932 the town was called San Mauro di Romagna; then it took the name of the poet born here on the last day of 1855, Giovanni Pascoli. His house has been a national monument since 1924, but the war damaged it so badly that only the original kitchen survived intact; today it is a museum, with his cradle, the furniture from his study in Bologna and nearly all the first editions. In 1897 Pascoli wrote to his friends here that his ideal world had the Uso and the Rio Salto for its boundaries, and for its centre the little church of the Madonna dell'Acqua and the cemetery full of cypresses.

In the cemetery stands the family mausoleum, where the Pascoli are buried but not the poet, who rests at Castelvecchio together with his sisters Ida and Mariù. The rest of the town has other stories: the estate of the Torlonia princes with its villa of 1780 known as the Torre, the Roman brick kilns that came to light during the digging of the Emilian-Romagnol Canal, and shoes, since Giuseppe Zanotti and Sergio Rossi were born here.
