Frassinoro

Province: Modena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 1,997 · Postal code: 41044

Frassinoro is the municipality whose main village stands higher than any other in Emilia-Romagna, on the ridge between the valleys of the Dolo and the Dragone. Until 1069 there was only a chapel here with a building to shelter travellers, because the via Bibulca passed this way, the road Beatrice of Lorraine and her daughter Matilda of Canossa took to go from their lands around Reggio to those around Lucca. On 29 August 1071 mother and daughter founded a Benedictine abbey here, for the souls of Beatrice's two husbands and for the safety of Matilda.

The following year Beatrice gave the abbey the relics of the martyr Saint Claudius, who entered the church's title, and in 1077 the two women handed it over to the Holy See. Where the abbey stood there is now the parish church of Santa Maria e San Claudio. In the municipal arms the golden ash tree states the name, the mountain with the tree already appear on a sixteenth-century seal, and the cross with the word PAX comes from the Benedictines. Of the road towards Tuscany a curious mark is left on the map: part of San Pellegrino in Alpe is an exclave of Frassinoro inside the province of Lucca.
