Palagano

Province: Modena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,354 · Postal code: 41046

The name perhaps comes from the Latin palaga, which means gold nugget, but no gold has ever been found here: in the mines of Boccassuolo they dug copper, chalcopyrite and iron. The village appears in a deed of 1144, was one of the most populous in the lands of the abbey of Frassinoro, and made itself a commune in 1197.

On 18 March 1944 a German unit killed in reprisal one hundred and thirty-six unarmed civilians in the hamlets of Monchio, Susano and Costrignano; out of this territory the partisan Republic of Montefiorino was later born. Palagano, suppressed as a municipality in 1869 and made a hamlet of Montefiorino itself, became autonomous again only in 1957. In the coat of arms there are a chestnut tree with seven golden chestnuts still in the husk, and a bee.
