Pievepelago

Province: Modena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,241 · Postal code: 41027

The name comes from the Lombards: below the village stood a lagar, a fortified post, and Pelago already appears in a diploma of Aistulf of 753; then in 1038 the church was raised to the rank of pieve, and the two words came together. At Roccapelago, in 2010, bodies mummified by the dry air of the crypt came to light under the church floor: today they are the museum housed inside the keep.

In 1957 the Italian Tennis Federation opened its summer centre here, and on the courts of Pievepelago Panatta, Bertolucci and Barazzutti played as boys; in summer Bologna and Lazio came here for their training camp too. The village's fortune, though, is older: the via Vandelli and the via Giardini, opened at the end of the eighteenth century to cross the Apennines towards Tuscany.
