In August 1489, this Emilian municipality became the birthplace of Antonio Allegri, the High Renaissance master who eventually adopted its name as his own. Known simply as Correggio, he dominated the Parma school through his dramatic foreshortening and mastery of chiaroscuro.
Currently home to roughly 24,800 residents in the Reggio Emilia province, the town is permanently inscribed in art history. Because Allegri's dynamic compositions prefigured seventeenth-century Baroque styles, the local name remains a constant reference point for students of Italian painting.
