Read more →A legend says that three villages hereabouts carry the pieces of one man's name: the Roman general Titus Cornelius Balbus is supposed to have founded Tizzano, Corniglio and Ballone, giving each a part of what he was called. The real name comes instead from a Titius who had an estate here; the notion of a burning brand found while digging does not hold at all.
The village appears for the first time on 8 March 991, in a deed by which Prangarda, daughter of Adalbert Atto of Canossa, sells some property. In 1551 a French garrison had shut itself in the castle: Ferrante Gonzaga shelled it at length, the French left by night without saying anything, and the soldiers sacked the village all the same.
