Feast of Saint Martin of Tours
📅 Every year, on 11 November
On 11 November Morsano al Tagliamento celebrates its patron Saint Martin of Tours, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
In Friulian the village is called Morsàn da lis Ocjis, Morsano of the geese, and a good many conjectures have been made as to why, none of which has been definitively accepted. The geese have stayed all the same: between the church of San Martino Vescovo and the town hall stand the astrolabe, the fountain of the geese and the monument in memory of Daniele Moro, and the village holds two goose feasts a year, the one in the first weeks of August and the fair that runs over three weekends in November. The other feasts follow the hamlets: the shrimp fair at Saletto, the Festa del Mus at Mussons, and at San Paolo, in October, the Perdon dal Rosari, with its goat dishes.
The kiln of San Paolo, built in 1902 near the embankment of the Tagliamento, is the last of the twenty-two kilns documented around Morsano between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth; it worked until 1976, and between 2019 and the summer of 2022 it was restored together with the two buildings beside it. The parish church of San Martino Vescovo was built in the eighteenth century over the remains of a thirteenth-century one; San Rocco, out in the open country south of the village, is of the early sixteenth. At Mussons the church of Sant'Osvaldo Re took the place of an oratory pulled down in 1803: the new building took a decade, and in 1821 it was given a floor in the Palladian manner with a line written across the middle, gloria dei concordia populi. In the night of 16 January 1944 English aircraft bombed via Latisana, and a monument remembers the victims. Long a land of emigration, Morsano lives today on farming and on small and medium industry.
