Feast of Saint Andrew
📅 Every year, on 30 November
On 30 November Ronchis celebrates its patron Saint Andrew; the town is also home to the Chiesa dei Santi Fermo, Rustico e Procolo.
The name comes from the Latin runcare, to clear woodland, and from the Friulian ronc, the ground put under crops once the wood has been cut. The first time it appears beyond doubt is the first of August 1261, in a customs pact over the Venetian salt landed at Latisana: the villa of Roncha was exempt from the duty, but had to keep the road to Venzone in repair.
Until the nineteenth century part of the land belonged to the comune and everyone could take their beasts there to graze. An imperial law of 1839 abolished those commons; at Ronchis they were shared out in 1843 by drawing lots. More was farmed, fewer animals were kept, and that way of working the land together came to an end. Water in the houses and asphalt in the streets arrived in 1965.
