Camino al Tagliamento

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,660 · Postal code: 33030

On the arms there is a roof with a smoking chimney, because the name was believed to come from the Latin caminu, the hearth — and kilns there were here until the eighteenth century. In fact it comes from the Slavic kàmen, «stone»: the gravel beds the Tagliamento has left around the village.

Camino has an old tradition of organ builders, known well beyond Italy. At the mill of Glaunicco, which ground corn until 1967, Ippolito Nievo set one of his stories, Il Varmo; and in the villa at Gorizzo the poet Ermes di Colloredo died, in 1692. Between 1928 and the war the comune was suppressed and put inside Codroipo: it came back in 1947.
