San Martino al Tagliamento

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,496 · Postal code: 33098

On the outer wall of the parish church there is an enormous Saint Christopher, frescoed by Pordenone in 1518 and by now almost worn away by the weather; inside, sheltered, hang two altarpieces by Pomponio Amalteo, who was Pordenone's pupil, married his daughter in 1534 and inherited his Friulian workshop. The master is outside fading, the son-in-law indoors.

The village has grown into Arzenutto and Postoncicco, once separate settlements: Arzenutto was sacked in 1363 by the troops of Rudolf IV of Habsburg and keeps a wooden triptych by Domenico da Tolmezzo. Between 1928 and 1946 San Martino did not exist as a municipality: it was a hamlet of Valvasone, whose fief it had been since the fifteenth century. The parish windows are by the sculptor Pierino Sam.
