Feast of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary
📅 Every year, on 7 October
On 7 October Casarsa della Delizia celebrates its patron, the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary; the town is linked to Pier Paolo Pasolini, who set part of his early literary work here.
The name is documented from 1182 as Casam arsam, which literally means burnt house. It may be the memory of a fire and a sacking — the Hungarian raids of the tenth century, when there was a Lombard arimannia here guarding the old Roman road — but a second reading prefers to take it as arid, from the nature of the soil. In 1867, so as not to confuse it with Casarza Ligure, a royal decree added della Delizia, taken from the name of a place to the east, by the bridge over the Tagliamento: that word means a prosperous and happy spot. So the village is called burnt house of the delight, and both halves are documents: one of a fire or a drought, the other of an administrative problem.
The territory is crossed by the line of the risorgive, the seam where the high plain gives way to the low one and the water comes back to the surface; and several rivers are born here. The Lemene, which will go on to wash the historic centre of Portogruaro at its fullest flow, is still called the Roggia Versa here; then the Sile, then the Reghena. The Tagliamento no longer touches the comune, but it did in a past that is not remote, when its bed shifted as far as Versuta, and the heavy soil still says so. Being a railway junction cost the town dear: in the last war the Allies half destroyed the built-up area, and until the end of the Cold War this was one of the best known military centres in Italy. Pier Paolo Pasolini lived here, in his mother's village, from 1942 to January 1950; here he is buried, and the study centre is in his mother's house. From Casarsa came also the Jacuzzi brothers.
