Flaibano

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,197 · Postal code: 33030

For fifty-one years the municipality had its seat in one village and the name of another: the chief place was San Odorico, but in 1876 the offices moved to Flaibano, by then the larger settlement, and the name changed only in 1927. At San Odorico the Benedictines kept the abbey and the ford over the Tagliamento, and on the ford they collected the toll.

In 1154 the patriarch Bertoldo asked that the monastery be moved inside Udine, because the banks of the Tagliamento were no safe place. The name of the village comes from a Flavius, the settler who was given the land; in the little church of San Giovanni there is a stone altar of the sixteenth century with painted figures, a rare thing in Friulian sculpture.
