Feast of Saint John Paul II
📅 Every year, on 22 October
On 22 October Rivignano Teor celebrates its patron Saint John Paul II; the municipal territory includes the Biotopo Risorgive di Zarnicco wetland.
Udine province runs from the Austrian and Slovenian borders down towards the Adriatic plain: 134 municipalities spread over nearly 5,000 square kilometres of Alps, foothills and flat farmland. The city of Udine, its administrative centre, sits roughly halfway along that drop. Friulian is a legally recognised language here rather than a regional accent, Slovene is spoken in the eastern valleys, and German survives in a few mountain settlements near the border.
The best of it lies outside the capital. Aquileia, now a village of some three thousand people, keeps a basilica whose floor is a fourth-century Christian mosaic. Cividale del Friuli has the Tempietto Longobardo, one of the very few Lombard buildings still standing largely intact. Palmanova is a Venetian fortress town laid out as a nine-pointed star, best understood from the air, and San Daniele del Friuli cures the ham that carries its name.
