Saint Thomas the Apostle, patron of Carlino
📅 Every year, on 21 December
Carlino celebrates Saint Thomas the Apostle on 21 December, in the church dedicated to him. The town also holds a church dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket.
The oldest place of worship in the territory of Carlino is the church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio, in the hamlet of San Gervasio: it was probably built in 1584 on the site of an earlier church, perhaps of the ninth century, and of that date there survives a carved stone, probably a lintel, now set into the wall of the sacristy. In 1690 the choir was enlarged and the altar built, and in 1908 the church was rebuilt from top to bottom. The parish church, on the other hand, is of the eighteenth century, and in the church of San Tommaso Becket, that is Thomas of Canterbury, there is a canvas attributed to Michelangelo Grigoletti. Here, beside Italian, Friulian is spoken, and the comune is above all a farming one.
But the thing you hear most at Carlino is music. On the Epiphany of 1938 the village founded its first band, dedicated to Santa Cecilia, with don Riccardo Valentinis as president; for a time it reached some eighty players, and then came the years of silence. In 1979 the cultural circle named after that same priest brought it back to life, with a three-year music orientation course and a teacher, Luciano Pinatto: the young people signed up in numbers, and the very next year the band made its first outing, by surprise. From that band everything else has come. Since 1992 the association has run a music school with more than eighty pupils; in 1995 it formed the youth band, from twelve to twenty years old; and since 2001 Carlino has held an international clarinet competition, which by 2020 had reached its eighteenth edition and has brought here more than 1800 competitors from over 35 countries. The organisers have not forgotten where the idea came from: among the rotating categories there is one for solo clarinet and band.
