Marano Lagunare

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,963 · Postal code: 33050

Marano belonged to Venice for almost four hundred years and it still shows: the dialect here is an archaic Venetian, close to that of Grado, and not Friulian. On the square stands the Torre Millenaria, thirty-two metres high, first heard of in 1066, its sides set with the busts of the provveditori; beside it the loggia where the community met, and over the loggia there once stood the town hall, which fell down in the eighteenth century for want of upkeep.

In 590 the synod held here sanctioned the schism of the Three Chapters, and the parish church still stands in via Sinodo. Every June the fishermen carry San Vito round the lagoon by boat; every three years, in mid-August, the Madonna goes out over the water to the cemetery church and comes back late at night.
