Palazzolo dello Stella

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 3,008 · Postal code: 33056

In 1624 somebody wrote to the Inquisition to denounce what went on at Palazzolo: the men and women of the village danced the Schiarazula marazula, singing in two choirs, to bring the rain. That letter is today one of the best-known attestations of that Friulian song of the Renaissance, and it has come down to us precisely because somebody wanted the thing stopped. Friulian is still spoken at Palazzolo, in its central-eastern variety. The rest of the name is the river: the Stella crosses the territory from north to south and ends its course right here, flowing into the lagoon of Marano, and at the mouth stand the lift nets of the fishermen. In Roman times the via Annia passed through, on the stretch between Concordia and Aquileia, and other finds say the site was inhabited even earlier.

The village calendar is still made of water and music. At the beginning of April the schoolchildren walk the banks of the Stella to get to know them and to clean them; at the end of August the canoes come down the river; the last weekend of July there is the regional bread festival; and in the middle of December, since 1989, «Fisarmoniche in osteria» takes the accordion players from inn to inn, from one table to the next. On the third weekend of November Piancada holds its Perdon for the Madonna della Salute, under a heated marquee, with the stall that is famous for chestnuts and mulled wine. And in June 1966 the banks of the Palazzolo marina were one of the Friulian sets of «La ragazza e il generale» by Pasquale Festa Campanile, with Virna Lisi, Rod Steiger and Umberto Orsini.
