Taipana

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 679 · Postal code: 33040

Taipana lies among the first ridges of the Julian Pre-Alps, and hereabouts the district is called the Valleys of the Bear. The name comes from a Roman estate, a fundus Octavianus worn down over the centuries into Octaipus and then Taipana; in Slovene it is Tipana, and the linguist Jan Baudouin de Courtenay recorded the form Tijpana in the tersko dialect spoken here. The population is Slovene: in the census of 1971 more than nine inhabitants out of ten were. The first written record is in a notarial deed lodged on 20 July 1320 at the parish church of Nimis.

The comune, though, has not always had this name: until 1931 it was called Platischis, which is now one of its hamlets. The change came late in the day, because as early as 1884 the town hall had been moved from Platischis to Taipana, with rows between the mayor and the people: first the seat moves, then, nearly fifty years later, the name follows. Another piece of local history lies in the woods: in 1886 they were divided into lots and granted to the inhabitants under a long lease, and only in 1974 did the holders become owners by law.
