Feast of Saint Camillus de Lellis
📅 Every year, on 14 July
On 14 July Lusevera, a municipality of 700 inhabitants in the province of Udine, celebrates its patron Saint Camillus de Lellis.
Lusevera lies in the upper Torre valley, at the foot of the Musi mountains, and is a scattered comune of eight hamlets whose seat is not Lusevera but Vedronza. Here places have two names, and the two names say different things: Lusevera comes from the Latin Luxvera, true light, because the village faces east, where the sun rises; in Slovene it is called Bardo, which means hill, because it stands on a rise above the valley. The population is historically Slovene — in the census of 1971 more than eighty per cent of it was — and descends from the Slav Villages, which governed themselves until 1420, when Venice arrived.
The climate here is a case of its own: the hamlet of Musi is the rainiest place in Italy, with 3300 millimetres of rain a year, and across the comune there occurs what geographers call the lowering of the altitude profiles — beech woods are found three or four hundred metres lower than usual. At Villanova there are horizontal caves, rare because karst usually cuts downwards: the most famous, the Grotta Nuova, was discovered in 1925 and can be visited. The earthquake of 1976 devastated the village and killed eleven people; the nursery school rebuilt afterwards is named after Graham Hill, because the money came from a race of Formula One drivers organised for Friuli.
