Visco

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 775 · Postal code: 33040

Until 1918 Visco was a border post: it lay inside the Habsburg empire, and nearby Palmanova, three kilometres away, lay inside the Kingdom of Italy. The village had passed to Austria in 1526, attached to the county of Gorizia. The name comes from the Slavic Višek, meaning summit, and the parish church of the Madonna della Neve dates from 1685: inside it has a high altar painted in the seventeen hundreds by Paulino Zuliani and a canvas attributed to Palma the Younger.

A stretch of flat land just outside the village went through a whole century of military history. In 1915 a field hospital was built there, which later became a refugee camp. In 1943, from January to September, it was an internment camp for Yugoslav civilians: there came to be more than three thousand two hundred prisoners, most of them Slovenes, Bosnians and Montenegrins brought from the Bay of Kotor. After the war the area became a barracks, closed in 1996.
