San Vito al Torre

Province: Udine · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 1,333 · Postal code: 33050

Inside a municipality of a few hundred houses the Friulian changes: at San Vito and Nogaredo feminine nouns end in -e, as in central Friulian, while at Crauglio they end in -a, as they say in Gorizia. The border between the two forms of speech runs through the village.

The land was granted in 981 by the emperor Otto II to the patriarch of Aquileia, and stayed with the patriarchate until the treaty of Noyon of 1516, when it passed to the Habsburgs: San Vito belonged to the county of Gorizia and Gradisca until the end of the First World War, and entered the province of Udine only in 1923, while for the church it still depends on Gorizia. At Crauglio stands villa Steffaneo, of the seventeenth century, with frescoes of Venetian taste.
