Castelliri

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 3,533 · Postal code: 03030

Castelliri stands on a knoll at two hundred and sixty-one metres, above the Liri, and the river is inside its name. The territory runs from north to south through very different country: the flat land along the river, then the hills, then the southern spurs of the Ernici mountains, where the wood of Castelliri lies; the highest point, Monte Castellone, reaches seven hundred and twenty-five metres on the boundary with Veroli. This land belonged to the Hernici, and came definitively into Rome's orbit between the fourth and the third century before Christ.

From 1443 Castelliri was part of the duchy of Sora, and it left it only in 1776, when Ferdinand the First brought it back into the Kingdom of Naples. Of the things the village keeps for itself, two are worth knowing: its band, the Città di Castelliri, which has been playing since 1877 and is one of the oldest in the province of Frosinone; and its red garlic, grown here and used in the local cooking. The churches are five, small and scattered: Santa Croce, San Rocco, Santa Maria Salome, the Madonna del Campo and the Madonna di Loreto.
