Feast of Saint Thomas the Apostle
📅 Every year, on 7 July
On 7 July Vallemaio, a municipality of 1,002 inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, celebrates its patron Saint Thomas the Apostle.
Until 1932 the village was called Vallefredda, cold valley, and the name told the truth: though the sea is thirty kilometres off, the winter here is genuinely cold. Then it took the name of the mountain at whose foot it stands, the Maio. It had been built around the year one thousand by the counts of Suio and the hypati of Gaeta; in 1079 Montecassino gave it a charter of liberties with rights generous for the time.
Then the Gustav Line came through. After the eighth of September they fought for months on Monte Maio, and the trenches dug then can still be seen. The village was almost entirely destroyed, and much of the ruin is still standing as the war left it; the civilian dead were many, and the works of art were carried off by the Germans.
