For two medieval centuries the Counts of Ceccano were the most powerful family in the papal Campagna, and their castle — still crowning the town — produced one of the most valuable sources of medieval Lazio: the Annales Ceccanenses, a chronicle written here between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
The town of 23,098 on the Sacco river also inherits a deeper past, standing where Roman Fabrateria Vetus once controlled the Latin Valley. The counts' castle, open again to visitors, offers the best single viewpoint over the whole Frosinone valley.

Ceccano celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June in the collegiate church dedicated to him; the town is also linked to the figure of Saint Magnus, bishop of Trani who died in Ceccano on 19 August 251, and to the statue of Saint Vitus, once at the centre of a feast on 15 June.
