Patrica

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 3,084 · Postal code: 03010

Above Patrica rises Monte Cacume, whose name comes from the Latin cacumen, the summit. Dante mentions it in the fourth canto of the Purgatorio, beside Bismantova, as an example of a steep climb: it is one of the few mountains of the Lepini to appear in the Comedy. In 1903 a cross fourteen metres high and weighing four hundred tonnes was raised on its top. The village lies lower down, at four hundred and fifty metres, on a hill commanding the Sacco valley; within the municipal territory the river has its second waterfall, at Tomacella.

The feast of the patron, San Rocco, falls on the sixteenth of August, and it is celebrated twice. In the twentieth century many people from Patrica emigrated to Aliquippa, in Pennsylvania, to work in the steel mills, and their descendants still hold the same feast on the same day, on the other side of the ocean. In November, instead, a national contest for radio amateurs remembers Riccardo Moretti, born here, a doctor and a pioneer of radio transmission, among the founders of the Regina Elena hospital in Rome. As for its lords, the village belonged to the counts of Ceccano and, from 1625, to the Colonna with the title of marquisate.
