Ceprano

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 8,740 · Postal code: 03024

Ceprano has 8,740 inhabitants in the Valle Latina, on the river Liri. The city was born as a Roman colony in 328 before Christ under the name of Fregellae; destroyed not long after, it could not be rebuilt on the same site nor take back the same name, because the devotio, the ritual curse, weighed upon it. So from 124 before Christ, a little further off, Fregellanum arose: and the ruins of the old city served as a quarry to build the new one.

Set on the border between the Papal State and the Kingdom of Naples, Ceprano was for centuries an obligatory passage: here, on the bridge over the Liri, on 11 October 1254 pope Innocent IV humiliated Manfred of Swabia, and here in 1259 Manfred clashed with Charles of Anjou — a battle the town re-enacts every October with the Palio delle Corti. In March 1994, on a road works site, Italo Biddittu picked a fragment of flat bone off the ground: it was the first piece of a fossil human skull, later called Homo cepranensis.
