The lake of Posta Fibreno has no inflowing streams: the water arrives from below, from the mountains of the Abruzzo park, and comes back up in the springs at a temperature that stays at ten or eleven degrees all year. In the middle floats the rota, an island of peat, rhizomes and roots, some thirty metres across and shaped like an upside-down cone, which moves with the least breath of wind.
At the deepest point, at Codigliane, a cross of steel and platinum by the sculptor Pino Bonavenia has stood since 1977. On the first weekend of August the divers bring it back up: on the Saturday evening it goes in procession over the water among torches, with boats and canoes, and on the Sunday, after mass on the shore, it goes back down. The comune itself has existed since 1957.
