Pescosolido

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,552 · Postal code: 03030

The name comes from Oscan: pesclum, rock, and sodolum, solid. Around the year one thousand, the chronicles say, the village filled up with people who had fled Sora and were waiting for the end of the world. On 22 September 1137 Lothair II gave Montecassino the chief castles of Sora, Pescosolido among them. Then came 1229: Frederick II razed Sora and ordered Stefano de Anglone, justiciar of the Terra di Lavoro, to burn Brocco and Pescosolido and force the inhabitants to leave. The order is recorded in the chronicle of Riccardo di San Germano; more than four hundred people of Pescosolido, stripped of everything, had to move away.

In 1254 the kingdom passed to the Church and the village was rebuilt as a fief of the D'Aquino; in 1266, after Benevento, Charles I of Anjou made Giacomo dei Cantelmi count of Sora, and the Cantelmi held it for almost a century. In 1349, little more than a hundred years after Frederick's fire, an earthquake razed it again. A document of 1517 on a reform of Pescosolido's statute describes a meeting attended by queen Joanna of Spain, the marquis d'Aquino, Fernando Francesco d'Avalos and Vittoria Colonna. Today the territory runs from the Liri valley to the first mountains of the Abruzzo national park, along the Serra Lunga ridge that divides the Liri basin from the Fucino, and its springs feed the lake of Posta Fibreno.

Feast of Saint John the Baptist

📅 Every year, on 14 September

On 14 September Pescosolido celebrates Saint John the Baptist; the village also remembers the evening of 8 September 1943, when the bells rang long for the armistice, before German occupation arrived anyway a month later.
