On the hill stands a castle of the eleventh century, and on its front a red cross can still be seen: the Germans painted it in the Second World War, when they used the place as a field hospital. Inside there remain a chapel with a frescoed Black Madonna and the chapter hall, from which the travertine of the fireplaces has been carried off over the years.
Not far off is the convent that Saint Francis founded in 1222, where he is said to have brought water out of the rock. It keeps a wooden crucifix of the tenth century that he used to pray before, a piece of board that served him as a pillow, and a piece of his grey woollen hood.
