Feast of Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 3 February
On 3 February Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, a municipality of 994 inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, celebrates its patron Saint Blaise, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
A document of 1275 sets out point by point what Sant'Ambrogio owed the monks of Montecassino: a tenth of what the land gave and a third of the wine, in exchange for free pasture for the livestock. The plain was still wooded then: first it was granted to settlers to be cleared into fields, and later they began to be charged rent for it, a hundred and sixty soldi of Amalfi.
The village appears in documents from 961, and «sul Garigliano» was added in 1862 to tell it from the other Sant'Ambrogios in Italy. At the start of the nineteenth century the inhabitants had fallen below a thousand and its comune was taken away, the territory passing to Sant'Apollinare; it got it back with the unification of Italy, but with less land than before. Then came the Gustav Line: it was among the first places to be freed, and was already in ruins.
