Sant'Andrea del Garigliano

Province: Frosinone · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,566 · Postal code: 03040

The name comes from a church that no longer carries it. The monks of Montecassino had raised here a cell dedicated to Saint Andrew; in 846 a Saracen band, on its way back to its base at the mouth of the Garigliano after beating a Frankish army, destroyed it. The princes of Capua rebuilt it and in 961 gave it to the Benedictines, and so the territory entered the Terra di San Benedetto. In 1045 abbot Richerio had the castle built and wanted the people gathered inside it for safety; the Normans seized it that same year, but were soon driven out. The church was later reconsecrated to Saint Benedict and in 1576 became a collegiate. The comune left the territorial abbey of Montecassino only in 2014.

The village lay on the Gustav Line, and the war struck all of it. On 5 February 1944, at Pontiera, the Germans shot four peasants in reprisal after a soldier was wounded. In those months captain Antonio Gagliardi, who among the partisans went by T13, organised a group in the area that harried the German troops; when the war ended he became the village's mayor. Liberation came on 13 May 1944, and in 1984 an earthquake added further damage. On the river the little port remains, once a landing for fishing and transport, and above the village the springs of the Mola Salomone, which fed a watermill.
