Caprifico di Torrecchia is an archaeological site in the locality of Le Querce, near Cisterna di Latina. Numerous finds came from the area, looted between the sixties and the nineties of the twentieth century and ending up in several international museums.
What to see
Once recovered, those pieces made it possible to reconstruct a terracotta roof twelve metres wide, which belonged to a temple dated between 530 and 520 BC.
The discovery of the temple, together with aerial photographic surveys that may have identified a settlement extending over thirty-seven hectares and with a position that agrees with the historical sources, has led some scholars to a hypothesis: that this was the site of Suessa Pometia, the vanished city of ancient Latium.
Visiting
Whether the area can be visited should be checked with the town of Cisterna di Latina; the materials from the temple are to be seen in Cori.
Our editors' tip
The Museo della Città e del Territorio in Cori displays more than two hundred terracottas attributed to the temple. They are the pieces stolen by unknown persons and then returned by two foreign museums, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Basel museum of antiquities with the Ludwig collection.
