The last born of the Pontine new towns — the first stone was laid on 25 April 1936, and the land was detached from the comune of Rome — Aprilia was almost wiped out in 1944, when the Anzio landing put it at the centre of the battle: rebuilt, it has grown into one of the most populous towns in Lazio. Of the original plan there remain the civic tower and San Michele, the rationalist core around piazza Roma.
It lies at the northern end of the Pontine plain, and by history and geography it thinks of itself as Roman countryside rather than Pontine marshland. Its title of city is recent: a decree granted it in 2012. Today it is a land of wine — the Merlot and the whites of the Aprilia cellars are making their way — and of engines, with the international circuit nearby. Rome and the sea at Anzio and Nettuno are half an hour away, in opposite directions.

On 29 September Aprilia celebrates its patron Saint Michael the Archangel; the city, inaugurated by Mussolini in 1937, was settled by colonists from Friuli, Veneto and Romagna, as well as Tyrolean-descended farmers who came from Bosnia and Romania.
