Aprilia

Province: Latina · Region: Lazio · Population: 66,979 · Postal code: 04011

The last-born of the Pontine foundation towns — its first stone dates to 1936 — Aprilia was nearly erased in 1944, when the Anzio landings put it at the centre of the battle: rebuilt, it grew into one of Lazio's most populous cities. Of the original plan survive the civic tower and San Michele church, the rationalist core around Piazza Roma.

Today it is wine country — Aprilia's Merlot and whites are earning their place — and engine country, with an international race circuit nearby. Rome and the beaches of Anzio and Nettuno lie half an hour away, in opposite directions.
