Rocca Massima

Province: Latina · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,094 · Postal code: 04010

The village is born from a document with a date: on the fifth of December 1202 Innocent III granted Pietro Annibaldi Monte Massimo with its appurtenances, requiring him to swear perpetual fealty to the Church and authorising him to build a fortress there, because the mountain sits astride the Sacco valley and the Pontine plain. From the mountain comes the name too. It is the highest village in the province of Latina.

At the end of the fifteenth century Rocca Massima governed itself: a governor, two constables and twenty-four councillors chosen among the heads of families. Part of its expenses it covered with taxes, the other part with three businesses it ran itself: the inn, the butcher's shop and two ovens. Today most of the people no longer live up there, but in the contrade below.
