Segni

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 9,101 · Postal code: 00037

Segni has 9,101 inhabitants in the Lepini mountains, above the valley of the Sacco. Ancient Signia is girdled by walls in polygonal masonry that have survived almost entire: they are the cyclopean walls, pierced by gates among which the Porta Saracena, roofed by monolithic architraves more than three metres long. Some have compared them to those of Mycenae, and the comune has since actually twinned with Mycenae. On the acropolis the church of San Pietro rests on the podium of the temple of Juno Moneta.

Signia was a city-state until the Latin war, then an ally of Rome, and in the third century before Christ it was the only town in Lazio to mint silver coins with the legend SEIC, from which its name is thought to derive. Once a municipium, it bore the initials SPQS. In 1585 Sixtus V raised Segni to a duchy. On 7 March 1944 Allied bombers destroyed the church of Santa Lucia and killed 132 civilians: the church was later rebuilt.
