Roccasecca dei Volsci

Province: Latina · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,126 · Postal code: 04010

Virgil, in the Aeneid, has Metabus flee Priverno with his daughter Camilla: they ford the Amaseno and take refuge on these mountains, and up at Lucerna there is an old building that people still call the House of Camilla. History says something similar: the village was made by people from Privernum who fled around 876, when the Saracens destroyed it.

The fief passed from the Ceccano to the Conti, then to the Carafa and the Massimo; a part of it ended up in 1762 in the principality that the Gabrielli put together with Prossedi and Pisterzo. The title of prince of Roccasecca dei Volsci, though, stayed with the Massimo, who hold it still. At Lucerna, in a closed valley on the border with Amaseno, people live on buffalo milk.
