Casaprota

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 723 · Postal code: 02030

Casaprota begins as a fundus of the abbey of Farfa, in the tenth century, and for two centuries belonged to the De Romania, the strongest family in the Sabina: papers survive of a quarrel of theirs with the Camponeschi over the church of Sant'Angelo. A branch, the Brancaleoni, sold the castle to the Orsini in 1476; in 1604 the village passed to the Papal State.

The coat of arms, granted in 1990, is not a generic symbol: it is a scene. Saint Michael, with silver wings and golden greaves, holds the shield with the red cross and runs his spear through a devil with horns, claws, bat's wings and goat's feet. In the palazzo del Gatto the furniture, the objects and the grotta — that is the wine cellar — have all been kept.
