Feast of San Pietro in Vincoli
📅 Every year, on 23 August
On 23 August Frasso Sabino, a municipality of 688 inhabitants in the province of Rieti, celebrates its patron San Pietro in Vincoli with the procession and the 'Canestro' parade.
There are three explanations of the name: the ash trees that surrounded the village and are now almost gone, the Latin fraxum, a guard post, or the roar of the springs of the Farfa, which run among the stones and can still be heard. The Farfa rises here, at Le Capore: it is the Fabaris that Virgil names in the Aeneid.
Inside an eighteenth-century farmhouse at Osteria Nuova stands a Roman tomb of the second century before Christ: the Grotta dei Massacci, a tholos made of enormous limestone blocks laid one on another without mortar. The village first appears in 955, in a donation to the abbey of Farfa; the castle belongs to the Sforza Cesarini, and on a hill above the houses stands the municipal astronomical observatory.
